1. Limit TV and video game time.
If they’re video game lovers, a great gift this holiday season might be video games that get them off the couch and burning calories, like Dance Dance Revolution and Nintendo’s “Wii Sports” games. They’re fun for kids of all ages.
2. Choose active weekend fun.
Instead of going to the movies, plan family games of soccer or even ping pong, when the weather’s lousy, or enjoy a day of skiing, ice skating, or hiking in the woods. If movies are everyone’s choice, walk to the movies and back, if possible, or take a 30-minute walk together before the movies.
3. Set routines.
Carve out time each day for exercise, and make it as mandatory as brushing teeth. For example, finish dinner each day with a 20-minute walk together. Soon, your kids will come to expect it. It’s just what you as a family do.
4. Be a great role model.
If you’re enthusiastic about staying active, your children and grandchildren will be, too.
