The
Pritikin Program reduces virtually all risk factors for heart disease,
including cholesterol, triglycerides, inflammatory markers like
C-reactive protein, and insulin levels.

In just three weeks, men at the Pritikin
resort reduced oxidative stress, controlled blood pressure, lowered
cholesterol by an average of 19%, and reduced insulin levels by
46%, significantly reducing their risk of heart disease.
(Circulation, 106: 2530. 2002)
More
than 60% of people who came to Pritikin with acute angina pain
experienced complete or significant relief and eliminated the need
for angina medication.

The majority of people who come to
the Pritikin resort suffering from acute angina (chest pain) leave
pain-free or with their pain greatly diminished. One study found
that 62% also left the resort no longer needing their medications
for angina pain.
(Journal of Cardiac Rehabilitation, 3: 183, 1983)
More
than 80% of people who attended the resort to avoid bypass surgery
were successful.

Sixty-four men attended the Pritikin
Longevity Center in lieu of undergoing the recommended coronary
artery bypass surgery. A five-year follow-up study revealed that
81% of these participants never needed surgery.
(Journal of Cardiac Rehabilitation, 3: 183, 1983)
Since 1975, the Pritikin Program has towered above other heart-health
programs in achieving remarkable results, all based on science
and research. Pritikin was the first program to demonstrate the
link between diet and conquering heart disease. In the late 70's,
the highly respected CBS-TV news program 60 Minutes documented
the Pritikin Program's extraordinary results when Morely Safer
and his team followed three men, all with severe heart disease,
as they attended a program at the Pritikin Longevity Center. All
three patients improved dramatically. Their angina (chest pain)
disappeared. They eliminated virtually all their medications. Their
cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressures fell into normal,
risk-free ranges. And, much to their delight, they regained their
energy and vitality, and resumed the lives they loved.
One year later, 60 Minutes revisited the three men and found that
all three had continued to enjoy active, vigorous lives free of
the symptoms of heart disease.
Since those programs aired, more than 100 clinical studies have
confirmed that the Pritikin Program can dramatically lower the
risk of a heart attack. Major risk factors can be substantially
reduced and, in some cases, even eliminated.
Other studies have confirmed multiple benefits of the Pritikin
Program, including reduced reliance on medication, elimination
of angina, increased coronary artery blood flow, and avoidance
of coronary bypass surgery.
Pritikin
Program controlled the Metabolic Syndrome. Fasting insulin was
reduced by 30-40%.

High insulin levels, high blood pressure,
high triglycerides, and obesity commonly aggregate in the same
individual and greatly increase the risk for coronary disease.
The Pritikin Program controlled this syndrome in just three weeks
in a majority of 72 guests studied. Fasting insulin was reduced
by 30-40%.
(American Journal of Cardiology, 69: 440, 1992)
Guests
at the Pritikin Center reduced total and LDL (the “bad”)
cholesterol on average 23% and triglyceride fats by 33%.

The link between blood cholesterol
and heart attacks is well established by three decades of scientific
research. Although many other factors may play a significant role,
cholesterol is the key villain. In an analysis of more than 4,500
participants in the three-week program at the Pritikin Longevity
Center, total cholesterol and LDL (the "bad" cholesterol) dropped
on average 23%. Triglyceride fats fell 33%.
(Archives of Internal Medicine, 151: 1389, 1991. New
England Journal of Medicine, 323: 1142, 1990)
UCLA
researchers documented that heart patients experienced significant
improvement in coronary artery blood flow after just a few weeks
on the Pritikin Program.

Using PET Scanning, the newest and
most accurate nuclear technology, UCLA researchers studied 13 heart
patients before and after a six-week program at the Pritikin Longevity
Center. During that brief period of time, they demonstrated a significant
improvement in coronary artery blood flow.
(Circulation, 92: 197, 1995)
Inflammation
markers like C-reactive protein plummet on the Pritikin Program.

In just two weeks, inflammation markers
like C-reactive protein plummeted 45% in women at the Pritikin
Center. No other diet and exercise program or drug therapy, including
statins, has proven to lower C-reactive protein so dramatically
or rapidly.
