Many research studies have demonstrated the potential benefits of specific vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in the prevention and treatment of heart disease and strokes. The following nutrients have been suggested as additional nutrition support along with the diet and lifestyle guidelines mentioned earlier:
- Chromium - Chromium is a trace element that plays a role in blood sugar regulation by working with insulin to help transport glucose into cells. Chromium deficiency has been found to cause elevated blood sugars in people with type II diabetes. Chromium supplementation may help improve blood sugar levels in these people.
- Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) Randomized and uncontrolled studies have confirmed fenugreek helps stabilize blood sugar control in patients with diabetes. In addition, it may helps lower elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood.
- Thiamine, Folic Acid and Vitamin B 12 - These vitamins play an important role in nerve health. Some studies suggest that supplementing with these nutrients may help improve symptoms of diabetic neuropathy.
- Magnesium - Diabetes patients tend to have low magnesium levels. Research suggests that supplementing with magnesium has led to improved insulin production in elderly people with type II diabetes. Insulin requirements have also been found to be lower in people with type II diabetes who are given magnesium supplements in some studies
