Last week, e-Perspective outlined the basics of strength training: how to get started, and the many benefits of working out just two to three times weekly.

This week, we’re focusing on strength training while traveling. Certainly, many hotels have gyms or access to nearby gyms that contain free weights and/or weight machines.

But if you prefer the privacy of your hotel room, try stretchy latex bands called resistance bands, resist-a-bands, or Dyna-Bands, the particular brand used in fitness classes at the Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa in Aventura, Florida.

What portability! Resistance bands weigh less than a running sock.  “Our guests, particularly frequent business travelers, love that they can just throw their resistance bands in a suitcase and go. It’s like bringing your own gym with you,” says Scott Danberg, M.S., Director of Exercise at Pritikin.

“And they’re very effective.” When used, resistance bands contract targeted sets of muscles, just like regular weights.

To get started on your own resistance-band workout, try this simple, doable routine: “7 Resist-A-Band Exercises For Losing Fat and Building Muscle,” part of a popular fitness class at the Pritikin Longevity Center taught every Tuesday and Thursday morning.
