Is hitting the gym more important than making healthy eating choices? Is it okay to have great eating habits and be a couch potato? Or to work out 5 days a week and feast on hot dogs and hamburgers? Pritikin Longevity Center & David Barton Gym have teamed up to answer some questions about how and why fitness and a healthy diet are both key to living a long and healthy life.

David Barton Gym: Time to go Toe to Toe!

  • I eat so healthy, but I still don’t have a six pack, why not?

    David Barton Gym: Losing body fat through diet is one of the keys, but abs, like any other muscle have to be trained in order to pop

  • I want to lose fat quickly; can I just eat well and jog?

    David Barton Gym: Sort of, if you maintain a proper diet. Choose anaerobic cardio like interval sprints over jogging to really burn the fat.

  • Speaking of losing weight, what’s the fastest and easiest way to rev up my metabolism? Diet or Exercise?

    Pritikin: Both a healthy diet & exercise are important to metabolism. Avoid crash diets, which are never a good idea & can backfire.

  • Is coconut flour a healthy flour option?

    Pritikin: Coconut flour contains artery-clogging saturated fat. ½ a cup has 8 grams of sat fat, more than what’s in many cheeseburgers!

  • I work out and eat healthy pretty often. Is it okay to have a cheat meal when out with friends?

    Pritikin: It’s all about progress, not perfection. There’s a lot of area between a carrot stick and the whole chocolate cake.

  • What about protein? Can I get stronger by eating a lot of protein or will my muscles get bigger from eating a lot of protein?

    David Barton Gym: Protein is an important building block to muscle growth, but resistance training is the only way to get bigger and/or stronger.

    Pritikin: A lot of people believe just the opposite! Can I bulk up by just lifting weights?

    David Barton Gym: Packing on muscle requires hard work in the gym and in the kitchen. Diet & exercise go hand in hand no matter what your goal.

  • Are there any diets that go particularly well with working out?

    Pritikin: Carbs, along w/ vitamins, minerals & phytonutrients found in food works well. The best choice is a plant based diet like Pritikin.

  • If I fall off the wagon with regards to healthy eating and/or exercise, do you have any advice on how to get back on track?

    Pritikin: Don’t beat yourself up. Move on. Get back on track as soon as possible and move forward with your healthy routine.

  • What is the easiest change to make in eating and exercise habits?

    Pritikin: As far as eating goes, it depends what you’re currently eating. Swapping out refined products like white pasta and white bread for whole wheat versions is really easy & healthy!

    David Barton Gym: As far as exercising, use a calendar & pick days/times you can make routine. Your health is the most important appt of the day!

  • Should I eat 5 small meals a day or 3 big meals when working out?

    Pritikin: Listen to your body – eat when you’re hungry, drink when you’re thirsty. Stop eating when you’re comfortably full- not stuffed.

  • I’ve only got 30 minutes to workout, should I do cardio or weights?

    David Barton Gym: Depends on your goal, but weight training should always be your go to. Set up a weight circuit and you’ll get the best of both!

David Barton Gym: There’s really no way to get around it! Fitness & food go hand in hand. You need to eat right & exercise to stay in shape!
