Longevity, Independence, and Quality of Life: What Every Woman Should Preserve, Measure, and Improve

Women are living longer than ever before, but longevity is about more than adding years to life. It is about thriving whilst you age by preserving independence, physical function, and quality of life throughout the aging process.

Director of Applied Longevity Science Dr. Rachel Gastaldo, PhD, of Pritikin Longevity Center will explore the physical abilities women tend to lose with age, why strength is only one part of the equation, and how to determine whether your current approach to healthy aging is actually working. Attendees will learn which assessments and measurements provide meaningful insight into long-term function, what women should be paying attention to beyond traditional health metrics, and the practical, evidence-based strategies that support healthy aging. Leave with a clearer understanding of what to preserve, what to measure, and where to focus your efforts to support longevity, independence, and quality of life for years to come.

During the session, and guided by a moderator, Dr. Gastaldo will address questions including:

  • What does longevity really mean for women, and what should we be working to preserve as we age?
  • Which physical abilities matter most for healthy aging, beyond simply maintaining muscle?
  • Why strength matters, and why power, balance, and mobility are equally important for long-term health.
  • How can you tell if your lifestyle changes are truly improving your health and longevity?
  • Can women become stronger, fitter, and more physically capable in their 60s and 70s than they were in their 50s?
  • What role do exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle medicine play in extending healthspan?
  • What measurable health improvements are women experiencing through the Pritikin program today?
  • Where should women start if they want to invest in their future health, vitality, and independence?

Hand Grip Strength Test
A simple assessment that measures overall muscle strength and function. Grip strength has been shown to be an important indicator of healthy aging and can provide meaningful insight into physical function, independence, and long-term health.

Five Times Sit-to-Stand (5xSTS) Test
This assessment measures how quickly a person can rise from a chair and sit back down five consecutive times. Lower-body power is a key marker of functional aging because it reflects how quickly muscles can produce force for everyday activities such as standing up from a chair, climbing stairs, walking efficiently, recovering balance, and preventing falls. The test provides a practical and meaningful way to assess functional capacity and identify opportunities to improve mobility, independence, and longevity.
